Letting Go, Gawande’s 2010 piece from The New Yorker
In this powerful clip from Dr. Atul Gawande on Frontline’s recent episode, ‘Being Mortal,’ he talks honestly with a former patient’s husband about the difficult conversations and decisions they had to make about her unexpected illness and death. In the video, Dr. Gawande reveals how doctor’s emotions can get in the way of honest communication at the end-of life. In the full episode Gawande also discusses situations from his own life which prompted him to reevaluate how doctors and patients talk about these difficult decisions.
This is one of the most difficult circumstances. You don’t want to be the downer. Having any kind of discussion that would begin to say, “Look, you probably only have a few months to live. What do we do to make the best of that time, without giving up on the options that you have?” That was a conversation I wasn’t ready to have. I don’t think any of us were.
